Chapter 14 - Things Are Changing

It had been two months since Scarlett had collected her results and not much had changed. For four years, Scarlett had managed without Jason; Scarlett had continued to learn as Jason wanted. She had finally finished school. It was getting annoying explaining why Jason had left and why she was always with Mark and Thomas. She has been going every weekend working on her skills. She didn’t want to let Jason down when he came back from wherever he was so they could go on missions together.

Scarlett had been in classes with Thomas learning to panic less. Thomas would put her in the middle of the room, then he and ten strangers would walk around her shouting insults. She managed to sit in the chair for 30 minutes before having to put her hands over her ears to block it out.

Her class with Mark was just about to start and she was becoming quite excited to do these. It had been easy learning the patterns of plants and rocks as well as the art of disappearing. Mark was very pleased with her progress but now just had to turn that skill set into a survival skill. Scarlett walked into the survival room and headed to sit next to Mark.

“Hey, you’re doing good, but this time, I want to start timing you for your survival,” Mark spoke confidently trying to make sure that she knew that he was the one in charge in the training room. “The quicker the better; gives you more time to prepare for an advance.” She sat down by the tree area Mark had set up against the back wall and was ready to start painting when Mark said go. The timer started, and Scarlett started to paint and blend in with the setting but when the timer stopped, she was only halfway through.

“I know I was slower than normal this time. I was just wondering - if I was to put other things with it, would I be quicker or slower?” Scarlett questioned hoping things between them wouldn’t change as he had grown to be such a good friend to her. They all knew that she missed Jason sometimes and held on to them to make sure they wouldn’t leave. But she cared for them like family.

“That would work and improve your speed. And the lying is coming along too. From your lesson the other day, I would say you have almost completed your beginner’s training,” Mark complimented her, hoping that she would keep improving as she was.

“If that’s all, I’m going to get cleaned off and go home.” Mark just nodded. Scarlett walked out of the room and got cleaned up. She was about to leave through the exit.

“Where do you think you are going?” Morgan shouted to Scarlett as she was almost at the exit. He ran towards her then twisted her around and walked into a room labelled Debriefing.

“Where are you taking me? I want to go home
